At its core, blogging is a social endeavor.
The idea is to draw people in and share your knowledge, services or a product you may have created. The thing is, no matter how compelling your topics are, or how brilliantly you craft your posts, if you forget the social aspect, you might continue to hear crickets. If you want to keep a blog audience engaged, then you need to do a little more than just write like Hemmingway.
Here are a few tips that will help you make a good blog great.
Regularly read and comment on other blogs.
You most likely already know other blogs within your niche or that cover complimentary topics. You have some favorites that you really admire. Excellent – now is the time to become a regular commenter on those blogs. Some important things to keep in mind while doing this:
- Make sure you create a professional name for commenting and link to your own blog in your comment profile, but stop there at any other self-promotion.

Are we trying to sell people? Or are we providing an opportunity for great guys to get exactly what they are looking for? In the fraternal world we are a “big time program”; through our scholarship programming we should help them succeed academically and our chapter home should have a great atmosphere filled with good people. However, we have more to offer than that. Football teams don’t have core values or the LEAD program and they aren’t partnered with Habitat for Humanity, St. Jude’s or Character Counts! Are we mentioning all of this during recruitment? Are we giving guys what they want? When we offer these things we get guys who are drawn to these ideals, those are the guys who might not be “starters” or “national champions” today. But a few years from now when we learn what the class is really made of, they will be our “starters” (officers) and might have laid the foundation for us to be “national champions” (Rock Chapters).
Hi Tracy,
Just to clarify, are you trying to figure out how to position your blog and your message to your audience? Because for the most part, selling a great product or service is the same thing as providing people with an opportunity to get exactly what they’re looking for. If you want to clarify a little more, i’d be more than happy to help out. Thanks for commenting!
Cheers,
Kola
