There are so many of us that want to make a difference and help other people but we can’t!

We can’t do it because money gets in the way.

Hence, this blog post about popular saving tips that are working for me

The first thing I’ve done is to set a goal.

Specifically, I’ve set a certain 5 figure amount that I want to have in savings by the end of the year.

As of today, I am about 60% of the way to this goal. YAY.

So which money saving tips are working for me?

1. Food

I eat at home as much as possible.

It also doesn’t hurt that I’m married to an amazing chef whose cooking I actually prefer to any restaurant food anywhere.

2. Mint

My mint account has been – hands-down – the most valuable tool for me in terms of setting and achieving my financial goals.

Let me tell you something.

Every month, I put away the amount of money I have committed to saving and then I go the extra mile to put extra into savings. Why?

…because I want mint to tell me I’m ahead of schedule by xyz number of days. Lol.

3. Luxuries

The only luxury that I really allow myself is travel.

I feel incredibly thrilled to be able to travel and see this remarkable world we live in.

However, even with this luxury, I am frugal.

I never pay full price for plane tickets because I am always on the lookout for deals.

I don’t stay in fancy hotels because I’m more of an “off the beaten path” type of person.

And I know how to haggle like a champ because that’s how we roll in Nigeria.

Shoutout to Tejuoso market and Alade market!

4. Minimalism

On a related note, I live a generally minimalistic lifestyle.

In other words, I don’t buy things unless they have a very specific utility or purpose.

I also avoid buying things that other people have until I’m sure that I’m not just trying to keep up with the Joneses and Abubakars.

Of all four tips, this is probably the biggest money saver of all.

Question

  • Some people say you need money to make a difference. Do you agree with this?
  • What’s working for you with regard to saving your money?

  1. I read this book in one day because I couldn’t put it down. Every page had something that made me laugh or cry or look at life differently. I felt encouraged by the time I finished this book to believe that even though life has it’s ups and downs there is a purpose for all things that happen to us. Go and get this book now!

  2. How evil of you?! Marrying a chef? That’s cheating!

Lol I’m impressed you did this video. I’ve always wondered how you satisfy your travelling impulses without breaking the bank :)

    1. I’m learning via osmosis LOL!

Was intending to improve from my current proficiency but haven’t really made it a priority unfortunately

  4. Amazing chef passing by :)

I think the most important key to saving for me, is to treat your savings like a bill or tithe. Once you get your paycheck, you immediately pay that ‘bill’. Yes, some folks do it automatically, but I like the conscious feeling of me paying myself :)

    1. Lol! @ amazing chef. I love that tip! And in fact, i think YOU are the one that should have done this video not me because you’re very smart with money
