❼ 5 Things Every Workaholic Should Know About the Holiday Season

workaholic behaviorThis is a list I wrote for myself when I realized just how much I suck at holidays.

I spend 10 months out of the year relentlessly focused on having faith, traveling more, having money, and making a difference.

I get up before the sun and I work until the moon comes out.

But somewhere around November ending, the entire world seems to slow into a thick crawl.

I’m suddenly expected to take a chill pill, sleep in, take 3 day weekends, and get excited about jello, turkey, and chubby men wearing the same red suit from 1959.

This list has helped me this year.

I hope it helps you too.

1. It’s not going away

No matter how much you wish for more time to get stuff done, the holidays WILL come.

People WILL take time off.

Shops (even Walmart) WILL close on Christmas day.

Since you can’t do anything about this, maybe you should just chill and accept your fate. eh?

2. It will come again next year

Assuming all else remains equal, there will be a holiday season at the end of the year, every year, for the rest of your life. The best thing you can do for yourself is to learn to get good at holidays.

I mean. It’s going to happen every single year forever

…and ever.

3. Some people will NEVER understand that relaxing stresses you out

workaholic behaviorI’m sure you have at least one friend (or family member) that lives for the holiday season.

They can’t wait to inject themselves into your schedule.

Their eyes go googly when they think of all the 3 day weekends and Christmas carols.

Guess what?

They’re not going anywhere either.

Better get used to them and appreciate them for the balance they bring into your life.

4. Breathe

Breathe my friend. Breathe.

You won’t get as much done during the holiday season because (see #3 above) and that’s okay. Your to do list is just a list.

It’s not the end of the world.

Yeah a couple of emails won’t get sent and things won’t get checked off your list.

It’s okay.

You can do those things tomorrow (assuming the entire day isn’t already booked with holiday parties).

5. Speaking of holiday parties

When you go to those, try to have fun.

Don’t think about all the things that aren’t getting done.

Stop worrying about your work. Work will always be there. Jello and friends won’t.

So enjoy the jello. Laugh when somebody says something funny. Eat cake.

Enjoy the time off because (see #1 above)

Good luck.
